NCS (Nerve Conduction Studies)

What are Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)?

Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) are tests that measure the speed and strength of electrical signals traveling through the peripheral nerves. They are used to diagnose nerve damage and dysfunction, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, neuropathy, and radiculopathy.

How is NCS Performed?

During an NCS, surface electrodes are placed on the skin over the nerve being tested. A small electrical stimulus is applied to the nerve, and the response is recorded. The test measures the speed and intensity of the nerve signal. The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Benefits of NCS

• Non-invasive: No needles are involved; only surface electrodes are used.
• Accurate Diagnosis: Helps pinpoint the location and severity of nerve damage.
• Quick and Safe: The test is completed quickly and poses minimal risks.

Risks and Side Effects

NCS is a safe and non-invasive procedure with no significant risks or side effects. Some patients may feel mild discomfort from the electrical stimulus.
